World Book Day

As part of our Literacy Strategy for raising attainment in Literacy, Maxwellton Primary and Nursery are celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 1st March. The aim of this day is to promote a love of literacy, especially reading. The following exciting reading events will replace the ‘normal school day’ and will give an opportunity to raise funds for literacy resources in Maxwellton.

To inspire pupils, we have organised for a professional storyteller from ‘The Scottish Story Telling Centre’ in Edinburgh to come in to share stories with the classes. Robert Howat, a Lanarkshire author and storyteller will share his interactive and entertaining stories with the classes of the morning of World Book Day.

Paired reading

Middle and Upper school classes will be paired with the infant and nursery classes to share a story at different times throughout the day.

Sponsored Event

Between 2pm and 3pm the whole school will participate in a Sponsored Bedtime Books Event where classrooms will transform into a giant slumber party for silent reading. Sponsor sheets for this will be sent home with each child. Any donations to support this event to raise funds for literacy resources would be greatly appreciated.

Pyjama Day

Pupils are welcome to come to school dressed in Pyjamas for 50p to enjoy the Bedtime Book Event On Thursday 1st March.

Whole School Story

The whole school have been working to write our very own story. Each class has contributed to a section of the book, and winning illustrations by pupils have been included. A competition to design the front cover will be open to all pupils. The entry cost is 20p. This book will be on sale on Maxwellton Book Day for £1.

Parents are welcome

If you would like to come to school on World Book day to share reading with the pupils please contact the school office and Miss White will contact you to liaise to find a suitable time.

Book Sale

The Pupil Council would like to recycle unwanted books by running a second hand book stall on World Book Day. If you have any donations of unwanted books in good condition please send them in to the P5 Pupil Council Reps. Books will be on sale ranging from 10p-50p.

Please send in photographs of pupils enjoying reading in unusual places. We would like to share these during our assembly on World Book Day, as well as on the TV at the front foyer. Please send in your photos by 3pm on Wednesday 28th February to Miss White at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

If you are sending in any money for this event please put it in an envelope with your child’s name, class, the amount and what it is for.

We want to focus on loving literacy in as many ways as we can. Feel free to bring in your favourite reading books from home to share on this special day.

Many thanks for your support,

Miss White
